The pursuit of mental health equity for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities is both a critical challenge and a profound opportunity. Our diverse communities bring a wealth of strengths and resiliencies that have long been foundational to our experiences in the face of adversity. From the rich tapestry of cultural traditions that foster community and belonging, to the profound value placed on family and intergenerational wisdom, AANHPI cultures possess inherent strengths that contribute to mental resilience and well-being. However, despite these powerful assets, AANHPI individuals often encounter significant barriers to accessing mental health care, including cultural stigmas, language differences, and a lack of culturally responsive services. These challenges underscore the need for mental health equity—a system where care is not only accessible but also acknowledges and integrates the cultural strengths and specific needs of AANHPI communities. By emphasizing mental health equity, we not only strive to dismantle barriers to care but also to celebrate and leverage the unique strengths of AANHPI people. This approach involves creating services that are as diverse and dynamic as the communities they serve, ensuring that mental health resources are respectful of cultural identities, and empowering AANHPI individuals to seek support in ways that honor their heritage and experiences. Achieving mental health equity means recognizing the resilience within AANHPI communities and working collaboratively to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, supported by a care system that genuinely reflects the diversity of human experiences.
We are dedicated to ensuring every member of the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community has equitable access to physical and behavioral health services. Our mission is to eliminate barriers through research, advocacy, education, awareness, and empowerment of the community.
